About the role

  • Legal Counsel supporting Alberta’s securities regulator on private markets, emerging technologies, and digital assets. Developing policy, reviewing filings, and advising market participants on securities-law compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal, policy, and regulatory support to the Private Markets & Innovation team
  • Conduct legal and policy research on securities law issues affecting small and scaling businesses, emerging technologies, digital assets, and tokenization
  • Engage with early-stage businesses, investors, legal advisors, accountants, and other stakeholders through educational seminars, workshops, and outreach sessions
  • Provide legal support to Corporate Finance staff in reviewing filings submitted to the ASC
  • Identify legal or policy issues requiring further analysis, escalation, or stakeholder communication
  • Develop practical legal and policy analyses and recommendations
  • Participate in project teams and committees developing policies, rules, guidance, and other regulatory initiatives
  • Draft, review, and refine policy materials, guidance documents, memoranda, presentations, and other resources

Requirements

  • A law degree
  • Approximately two to four years of relevant legal experience
  • Membership in good standing, or eligibility for membership, with the Law Society of Alberta
  • Experience in securities law or interest in small and scaling companies, private markets, corporate finance, capital raising, disclosure obligations, regulatory policy, or business law
  • Some knowledge of securities legislation, rules, instruments, policies, and regulatory guidance
  • Ability to deepen securities-law knowledge through legal research, practical application, and mentorship
  • Understanding of challenges facing small and scaling companies, private-market activity, capital-raising alternatives, and regulatory compliance issues, or ability to develop this understanding quickly
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to explain regulatory requirements in a practical and accessible manner
  • Ability to work out of the ASC office in Calgary, Alberta
