About the role

  • Credit Risk Analyst optimizing line-assignment and increase strategies for American Express Canada’s consumer and small-business portfolios. Monitoring risk, profitability, governance, and customer outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance Initial Line Assignment strategies for new accounts using application information, internal data, credit bureau data, risk scores, debt capacity, and other relevant attributes.
  • Design and manage proactive and reactive line-increase strategies for existing customers, incorporating risk eligibility, income, tenure, spending, repayment behavior, exposure, and affordability considerations.
  • Evaluate credit-line proposals through risk-adjusted profitability, customer appropriateness, and sustainable lending lenses while maintaining alignment with approved risk appetite, policies, procedures, and authority levels.
  • Conduct portfolio analytics, segmentation, and performance monitoring to assess approval rates, line sizes, utilization, delinquency, write-offs, and other key outcomes.
  • Identify emerging risks, trends, and opportunities; recommend changes to decision rules, models, cut-offs, caps, suppressions, and other strategy parameters.
  • Prepare documentation, management reporting, and governance materials, including rationale, impact assessments, control considerations, and timely escalation of material trends or exceptions.
  • Partner with Decision Science, Centre of Excellence, Technology, Product, Finance, Compliance, Legal, Credit Operations, and other stakeholders to implement strategies accurately and deliver required capabilities.
  • Support validation, testing, implementation, and post-launch monitoring of systematic decision strategies and related controls.
  • Maintain process discipline and data quality, and contribute to policy, procedure, audit, regulatory, and control activities.
  • Translate complex analysis into concise recommendations for senior leaders and influence decisions through fact-based insights.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in quantitative or business discipline such as Statistics, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; advanced degree is an asset.
  • Experience in credit risk management, underwriting, lending strategy, customer management, portfolio analytics, or a related financial-services discipline.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret large datasets, identify meaningful patterns, and convert findings into practical risk strategies.
  • Proficiency with analytical tools such as SQL, Python, R, or equivalent, together with advanced Excel skills; experience with data visualization tools is an asset.
  • Understanding of credit bureau information, risk scores, underwriting concepts, line assignment, affordability or debt-capacity considerations, and portfolio performance metrics.
  • Ability to balance growth, profitability, customer experience, and credit risk within established governance and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain analytical findings and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative environment.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian consumer lending and regulatory environment is an asset.
  • Employment eligibility to work with American Express is required; the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.
  • Successful completion of a background verification check, subject to applicable laws and regulations.
