Senior Layer1 Software Engineer developing C/C++ and Python software for physical-layer networking at Arista Networks. Building telemetry, automated tests, and hardware control features for data-center connectivity.
Responsibilities
Develop software managing physical-layer networking and connectivity components
Write control software for connectors, long-reach optics, forwarding engines, and interface chips
Build instrumentation and telemetry tools to monitor and troubleshoot physical link health
Define standards for new media with Optics teams and bring them to market
Add features, debug problems, and optimize code for scalability and performance
Own projects from definition through deployment and customer interactions
Interface with customers, product management, and hardware engineers to develop Layer1 features
Architect, design, and manage feature development
Develop and maintain features using C, C++, and Python
Review and contribute to functional and design specifications
Build automated tests and test infrastructure
Work with hardware and manufacturing teams to bring Layer1 components to market
Design software control interfaces for Layer1 components with hardware engineers
Provide technical leadership across features, projects, and tools
Analyze and resolve customer-network and system-test problems
Mentor new and junior engineers
Requirements
BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering plus 8 years of experience, or MS plus 6 years of experience, or Ph.D. plus 3 years of experience, or equivalent work experience
Expert knowledge of C or C++ and Python
Knowledge of UNIX or Linux
Applied understanding of software engineering principles
Strong problem-solving and software troubleshooting skills
Ability to design a solution and implement features independently
Ability to work in small teams
Knowledge of digital communication technologies such as modulation and signal encoding schemes is a plus
Understanding of IP networking and/or distributed systems is a plus
Experience working with low-level hardware components is a plus
