About the role

  • Business development manager advancing BLG’s national disputes practice at Canada’s law firm. Driving client growth, market profile, pitches, events and legal-sector relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and execute national Disputes practice plans
  • Attend, participate in and report on national and regional practice group meetings
  • Build relationships with practice group members by learning their expertise and business objectives, and provide coaching and support
  • Capture and draft experience narratives for proposals and directory submissions using Foundation
  • Plan, lead and manage practice group programs and client events
  • Organize focus group meetings and manage action items
  • Monitor and analyze market and competitor activity
  • Work with the Pursuits Team to support new business opportunities
  • Manage, track and report on business development expenses
  • Direct strategies to grow revenue and support clients
  • Support lawyers with key client relationships and account management
  • Facilitate Client Service Team meetings and reporting for key clients, tracking outcomes and milestones
  • Seek business development opportunities with existing and potential clients
  • Manage client lists in the CRM
  • Raise the Firm’s profile through directories, ranking submissions and awards
  • Coach legal professionals in personal profile building
  • Manage Disputes-related website content
  • Manage sponsorships, memberships and industry associations
  • Increase BLG’s marketplace profile through web, social media, publications and newsletters
  • Collaborate with Clients & Markets functions to deliver seamless, consistent service
  • Oversee day-to-day practice business development activities

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Business/Marketing/Communications
  • 8+ years of experience, including a minimum of 5 years in a professional or legal services environment
  • In-depth understanding of legal and business environments
  • Comfortable operating in a matrix organization
  • Exceptional relationship-building and interpersonal skills
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills with demonstrated ability to innovate
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player and autonomously
  • Strong professional presence and conduct, with ability to work with Senior Management
  • Effective time management and ability to manage concurrent projects
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting concepts, budgeting and quantitative analysis methods
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with strong attention to detail
  • Established knowledge of Microsoft Office suite software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and CRM
  • Familiarity with RFPs, alternative fee structures and pricing strategies for professional services would be an asset
  • Bilingual English and French strongly preferred
