About the role

  • Copy editor shaping CBC North’s digital and social news content across Canada’s three territories. Writing headlines, packaging multimedia stories and coaching journalists.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the senior producer of digital
  • Ensure accurate and efficient delivery of content to CBC’s digital and social platforms
  • Copy edit breaking, enterprise and feature news content, multimedia projects, newsletters, social media copy, video titles and photo descriptions
  • Work with writers and editors to maintain accuracy, structure, story flow, context and style consistency
  • Write compelling headlines that drive audience interest and engagement
  • Quickly write breaking news and curate website lineups as needed
  • Build and package digital stories with multimedia content
  • Monitor news developments and maintain CBC North’s website with current and varied content
  • Provide coaching and feedback to journalists and freelancers
  • Assist in communicating digital news best practices
  • Make independent editorial decisions in accordance with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices
  • Promote diverse perspectives and experiences in news content

Requirements

  • English language requirement: reading, speaking and writing
  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced, daily multi-platform news environment
  • Strong journalistic and critical thinking skills
  • Knowledge of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism
  • Ability to manage and organize large volumes of fast-moving information
  • Substantial experience copy editing content for digital and social platforms, including fact-checking, legal vetting and packaging
  • Advanced knowledge of web, mobile and social media tools, industry trends and audience trends
  • Deep knowledge of Canadian Press style
  • Knowledge of CBCNews.ca style is an asset
  • Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and coach teams and encourage creativity
  • Strong proven connection to the communities served in all three territories
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required
  • Valid driver’s licence and driving record meeting CBC/Radio-Canada insurance requirements
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years of journalism experience
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing
  • Successful candidates must complete a mandatory criminal record check and other operationally required background checks
