About the role

  • Principal Customer Engineer guiding enterprise clients through Cloudflare’s network and security architecture, onboarding, and adoption. Driving technical validation, revenue expansion, and lifecycle customer outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical deep-dive discovery with Account Executives and capture business requirements
  • Map complex customer infrastructure to fit-for-purpose Cloudflare architectures and bespoke solutions
  • Define scope, success criteria, and technical evaluation plans for Proofs of Concept and Technical Validations
  • Deliver tailored technical presentations, architectural diagrams, and demonstrations
  • Address technical objections, security compliance questions, and edge-case architectural requirements
  • Provide oversight to technical onboarding and implementation as the primary executive and engineering contact
  • Design migration and onboarding blueprints for customer environments
  • Guide customer engineering teams through configuration best practices
  • Own discovery, demos, onboarding, technical health, risk, and expansion strategy with Account Executives
  • Monitor customer health scores and telemetry to ensure rapid time-to-value and reduce deployment risk
  • Carry a variable quota tied to new business acquisition and/or account growth
  • Identify cross-sell and up-sell opportunities based on product usage data
  • Lead technical Quarterly Business Reviews for C-level executives
  • Maintain trusted technical relationships throughout onboarding, maturity, renewal, and expansion
  • Provide guidance on architecture, AI control layers, security posture, and deployment confidence
  • Use AI agents, LLMs, and internal platforms to automate routine workflows
  • Design and govern technical resources, SOPs, architectural best practices, and technical guides
  • Educate internal teams and customers to raise the organization’s technical baseline

Requirements

  • Experience in a customer-facing technical role such as Solutions Engineering, Customer Engineering, Professional Services, Sales Engineering, Technical Account Management, or Forward Deployed Engineering
  • Ability to white-board, design, and clearly articulate complex enterprise network and security architectures
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to translate technical concepts into business outcomes for engineers and C-level executives
  • Proven experience in a quota-carrying or revenue-aligned environment
  • Strong understanding of SaaS metrics, business value translation, and enterprise sales cycles
  • Exceptional presentation and stakeholder management skills
  • Demonstrated depth in at least four technical areas
  • Deep understanding of Internet fundamentals including OSI Model layers 1–7, BGP, GRE, TCP/UDP, DNS, HTTP(S), and SSL/TLS
  • Expertise in Internet security including WAF, Bot Management, Firewalls, Rate Limiting, (M)TLS, Zero Trust, and SASE concepts
  • Expertise in Internet performance including speed, latency, caching, video streaming, HTTP/2, and TLS 1.3
  • Familiarity with prompt engineering, AI-assisted scripting and log analysis, LLM utilization, and workflow automation
  • Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, Bash, Lua, Go, or similar languages
  • Experience with RESTful/GraphQL APIs, SDKs, webhooks, developer tooling, infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipelines, and observability
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Role may require travel up to 20–50%
  • Any offer may be conditioned on authorization to receive technology controlled under U.S. export laws without sponsorship for an export license
