About the role
- Mechanical Engineer designing HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems for EXP’s built-environment engineering practice. Managing multidisciplinary projects, quality reviews, construction support, and designer mentoring.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and review HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems load calculations
- Create written specifications reflecting project requirements
- Coordinate mechanical requirements with other disciplines and consultants during SD and DD phases
- Select and schedule HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems equipment
- Meet with vendors to determine application specification requirements
- Respond to RFIs and accurately review submittals
- Provide construction support, answer construction queries, review shop drawings, and provide construction change documentation
- Apply risk management procedures to minimize EXP and client exposure to problems
- Plan work and manage the design process within available work-plan hours
- Deliver appropriate SD, DD, and CD level documentation
- Work with PCs, PMs, and clients to meet milestones across multiple projects
- Manage and deliver revisions and sketches according to numbering conventions
- Edit and develop scope-of-work narratives, SD narratives, and bases of design
- Direct and mentor Designer-level staff
- Perform at a responsible-charge level while meeting design and quality standards
- Conduct QA/QC reviews of Designers' calculations and provide guidance
- Determine drawing and specification content for Designers
- Develop and monitor work plans with other PMs
- Review code-related items and ensure compliance
- Manage work plans and deliverables on multiple projects within budgeted hours
- Write studies and reports for project systems
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree
- 7+ years in project management/mechanical design experience
- Must hold a professional engineering, P. Eng. license with the PEO
- Strong leadership skills and good communication capabilities
- Building design experience
- CAD proficiency with working CAD drawings
- Thorough knowledge of relevant codes and standards
- Experience with HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems
- Experience writing controls sequences of operations for AHUs, CHW and HW systems
- Knowledge of hydronic heating and chilled systems
- Knowledge of variable and constant flow systems
- Knowledge of CV, VAV, and VVT air systems
- Knowledge of exhaust systems
- Knowledge of domestic water, sanitary, and storm drainage systems
- Knowledge of natural gas piping systems
- Thorough understanding of psychrometrics
- Advanced equipment selection and analysis
- Thorough understanding of humid climate design risks
- Thorough understanding of total energy concepts
- Preferred experience in educational, institutional, and healthcare industries
