About the role
- Senior Backend Engineer building scalable backend, ETL, and reporting systems for Commerce7, a winery commerce platform. Modernizing legacy databases and powering data-intensive SaaS APIs.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of a multi-tenant reporting architecture serving over 3000 tenants and millions of processed records
- Architect and execute migration of legacy reporting systems (MSSQL/SSRS) into NodeJS/Aurora MySQL/AWS infrastructure
- Build, maintain, and scale ETL processes, data replication processes, and data synchronization engines
- Identify and resolve database performance bottlenecks using index optimization, denormalized columns, and rollup tables
- Design and build scalable REST APIs for SaaS reporting features
- Collaborate with Product to translate reporting requirements into technical implementation plans
- Work with Frontend Engineers to deliver data visualizations
- Participate in code reviews and write automated integration and unit tests
- Ensure backend code and data models follow modern best practices
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in backend software engineering with a direct focus on database architecture, data processing, ETL, and reporting systems
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript (ES6+) and NodeJS (Express, Fastify, AWS Lambda)
- Advanced hands-on experience with MySQL, modern ORMs (e.g., Sequelize), and writing optimized raw SQL
- Direct experience working with AWS cloud services (Aurora Serverless, DynamoDB, SQS)
- Demonstrated track record of executing database migrations or legacy system modernizations
- Strong understanding of indexing, stored procedures, denormalization strategies, and creating rollup tables for reporting
- Extensive experience building ETL processes, data replication, and high-volume data synchronization engines
- Experience working with modern ORMs while knowing when to bypass them for raw SQL performance
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- A deep empathy for the user and a desire to learn about how they use Commerce7
