About the role

  • Fire engineer designing and evaluating fire protection systems for GHD’s Canadian architecture, engineering, and environmental projects. Conducting risk assessments, code reviews, inspections, project management, and mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and review fire protection system designs, including fire alarms, sprinklers, standpipe, and clean agent systems
  • Conduct fire risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies
  • Evaluate occupant egress routes, fire separations, and fire resistance ratings of building components
  • Interpret and apply fire safety codes and regulations to assess building and system compliance
  • Review architectural and engineering plans for fire and life safety concerns
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and contractors during design and construction
  • Inspect and test fire protection systems, identify deficiencies, recommend corrective actions, and verify implementation
  • Conduct drills and exercises to assess emergency procedures
  • Prepare technical reports, specifications, and drawings
  • Maintain records of inspections, tests, maintenance activities, safety systems, and enhancements
  • Research and implement new technology designs to meet client objectives
  • Participate in client management, business development, and proposal preparation
  • Manage projects, including financial review, budgets, milestones, and deliverables
  • Attend design and coordination meetings
  • Peer review junior engineers' work
  • Mentor and assist junior engineers
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in fire protection technologies and methodologies

Requirements

  • B.Sc. degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Valid P. Eng. License in Ontario
  • Eligibility to practice in Quebec is an asset
  • 5–8 years of relevant experience in evaluating and designing water-based and non-water-based fire protection systems
  • Experience with fire alarm systems and building and life safety system assessment
  • Experience with inspection and acceptance testing
  • Experience with fire pump selection and water demand calculations
  • Experience on healthcare, commercial, industrial, and institutional projects
  • Ability to interpret and apply NFPA, NFC, IFC, OFC, OBC, and other building and fire codes
  • CFD modelling and smoke management are advantageous
  • Experience with design software, hydraulic calculation, and CAD tools
  • Familiarity with National, Provincial, and Municipal Codes and Standards
  • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously with multiple design teams
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including report writing and competitive proposal preparation
  • Ability to take design projects from start to finish using technical, professional engineering, and consulting expertise
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Project management capabilities
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Fire Protection Specialist or fire inspector are advantageous
