About the role

  • In-house counsel defending insurance claims for Intact, a Canadian property and casualty insurer. Managing litigation, trials, mediations, and legal documents across Alberta courts and tribunals.

Responsibilities

  • Handle insurance defence files of varying complexities independently from beginning to conclusion
  • Prepare and conduct applications, motions, discoveries, mediations, arbitration, pre-trial conferences, and trials
  • Draft opinions, pleadings, affidavits, motion application documents, mediation briefs, and pre-trial memoranda
  • Prepare and present legal educational seminars to the claims department
  • Maintain productive and effective communications with the claims department and adjusters
  • Conduct trials and hearings before the Court of King's Bench, Court of Justice, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Canada, and administrative tribunals
  • Utilize AI tools according to departmental usage and adoption goals
  • Adhere to established guardrails and ethical governance for AI usage

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Law (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree required
  • Current member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta
  • Dual bar licensing in Alberta and British Columbia considered an asset
  • Minimum two years of insurance litigation experience
  • Experience with MVAs, construction, commercial general liability, specialty lines, auto/transportation, long haul trucking, E&O, D&O, employment, or subrogation considered an asset
  • Expertise in drafting pleadings, reviewing and assessing voluminous production, conducting discoveries, and trials/arbitration
  • Superior organizational skills and ability to handle multiple case files simultaneously and independently
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build effective client relationships
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, research, and negotiating experience
  • Proficiency in alternative dispute resolution, including independent preparation and conduct of mediations
  • Proficiency with iManage, Citrix, ACL, Nuance, Generative AI, and Microsoft Office programs
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada from the anticipated start date and throughout employment
  • Responsible for maintaining work eligibility in Canada
