About the role
- Engineering Manager leading 6–8 distributed engineers at fintech startup Disputifier. Managing people and migration of e-commerce chargeback software from PHP to Ruby on Rails.
Responsibilities
- Report directly to the CTO
- Own and manage a team of 6–8 mid-to-senior engineers
- Manage the team day-to-day through 1:1s, coaching, growth, and performance management
- Add rigor to project communication and project management
- Contribute technically through code review, technical mentoring, architecture discussions, project scoping, and solution evaluation
- Participate in occasional coding as desired, though it is not a primary requirement
- Drive hiring for the engineering team
- Lead the migration from a legacy PHP codebase to a modern Rails stack using Ruby 4 and Rails 8
- Help define team scope based on strengths and interests
Requirements
- 1+ years of direct people management experience
- Experience managing distributed team members
- Experience managing diverse teams
- Software engineering background before management, ideally 3+ years
- Rails experience preferred, with flexibility
- Comfort with AI coding tools such as Cursor, Copilot, and Claude Code
- Ability to understand AI-generated code, judge its output, and remain accountable for shipped code
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, Aurora MySQL, AWS, server-rendered HTML, and light JavaScript
- Ability to work North American timezone; most team members are in the Eastern timezone
