About the role

  • Staff Data Engineer leading scalable data integration, governance, and reliability for Jobber’s small-business service management platform. Mentoring engineers and enabling trusted self-service analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable batch and real-time data pipelines
  • Shape foundational data components and anticipate future system needs
  • Lead and mentor data engineers while providing architectural and technical direction
  • Establish testing and reliability standards, SLAs, and disaster recovery playbooks
  • Lead reliability initiatives to minimize downtime and protect critical business data
  • Build monitoring, logging, lineage, and auditing frameworks
  • Define governance policies for data integrity, availability, and reliability
  • Develop self-service tools, frameworks, and automation for data access
  • Partner with Technical Program Managers on strategic roadmaps
  • Collaborate with Staff Engineers and technical leaders across domains
  • Enable data analysts, scientists, and product teams to explore, analyze, model, and report
  • Own data integrity and reliability across the organization
  • Participate in a one-week-at-a-time on-call rotation and occasional weekend maintenance support

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience with batch and real-time data processing frameworks
  • Experience with lakehouse/warehouse management, large-scale data transformation, data serialization, workflow orchestration, and dimensional modeling
  • Ability to design and deliver scalable, maintainable, high-performance solutions
  • Experience with containerization, CI/CD, and API development
  • Strong understanding and hands-on experience with relevant AWS services
  • Demonstrated success guiding teams through complex, high-impact projects
  • Exceptional proficiency in software design, system architecture, and coding
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code, including Terraform and CloudFormation
  • Background in observability, including logging, monitoring, and tracing
  • Exceptional communication skills, self-motivation, and resourcefulness
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, prioritize effectively, and deliver in fast-paced environments
  • Role available only to candidates based in Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver, or Kitchener-Waterloo
  • Must attend the office at least 1 day per week according to the department schedule
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Successful completion of a background check required
  • Participation in an on-call rotation, typically one week at a time
  • Machine learning platform experience, distributed compute frameworks, Ruby on Rails, TypeScript/React, GraphQL, developer tooling, and data privacy/security/compliance knowledge are nice to have
