About the role

  • Lead substation protection engineer designing 12–500 kV grid systems for Leidos’ utility power delivery services. Developing relay, AC/DC schematic, control panel, and commissioning solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support substation protection and control design projects
  • Own complex protection and controls designs across 12–500 kV systems
  • Apply advanced digital logic and AC/DC circuit expertise
  • Create and refine relay one-line diagrams defining protection zones and system topology
  • Develop detailed AC schematics covering current, voltage, and protection device relationships
  • Produce DC control and protection schematics
  • Design control panels, wiring diagrams, and physical layouts
  • Build bills of materials aligned with project criteria, equipment standards, and client requirements
  • Perform quality-control checks on wiring and schematic designs
  • Contribute from early scoping through final design, implementation, and energization support
  • Provide technical guidance during installation, testing, and commissioning
  • Apply National Electrical Safety Code requirements
  • Interpret and implement utility-specific standards
  • Partner with engineers, designers, and CAD technicians to produce complete drawing packages
  • Maintain compliance with project scope, schedule, budget, quality-control, and safe-work practices

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or related degree with eight (8+) or more years of substation protection control design experience
  • Experience leading and executing substation protection and control projects
  • Clear and professional communication with internal teams and clients
  • Ability to meet deadlines and stay organized in fast-paced or high-pressure situations
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and provide leadership when needed
  • Self-starter able to take initiative and work with minimal supervision
  • Strong analytical abilities and engineering problem-solving skills
  • High level of computer competency and comfort with engineering tools and software
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and client locations as needed
  • Candidates must live in Canada
  • Willingness and ability to travel to customer sites in the United States as needed
  • Engineer Intern (EI/EIT) professional certification (additional qualification)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (additional qualification)
  • Master’s degree in related field (additional qualification)
  • Field testing/commissioning experience (additional qualification)
