About the role

  • Assistant Controller managing accounting operations for Magna’s automotive technology group. Leading financial close, budgeting, forecasting, payroll, audits, and department staff.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, support and provide direction to all staff within the department through goal setting, performance monitoring, reviews, communication, and on-the-job training and development.
  • Maintain effective staffing levels and create succession and employee development plans.
  • Develop and execute an annual strategic plan supporting company performance objectives and industry benchmarking.
  • Collect, measure and monitor department effectiveness data, benchmark trends, and establish continuous-improvement action plans through the QOS process.
  • Develop and implement processes and procedures supporting changing business demands.
  • Facilitate department meetings and two-way communication using an Open Door philosophy.
  • Promote a fair, people-focused work environment consistent with the Magna Employee Charter.
  • Maintain visibility and accessibility to employees through Management By Walking Around (MBWA).
  • Prepare, approve and attain the department budget.
  • Ensure accounting practices comply with Magna, Intier, GAAP, and Sarbanes-Oxley policies and requirements.
  • Manage the month-end close process, including journal-entry approval, accrual completeness, financial reporting, and monthly financial statement analysis.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly forecasts.
  • Manage year-end closing, financial statement preparation, external audit file requirements, and liaison with external auditors.
  • Manage the annual budget process and reporting requirements.
  • Support department managers in understanding cost structures and identifying improvement opportunities.
  • Identify, document, and communicate accounting policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Maintain the signing authorization master list and archive accounting and payroll records.
  • Manage the payroll system and protect proprietary and human-resources information.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary Degree/Diploma in a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years related experience.
  • Accounting Designation (C.A., C.M.A., C.G.A.).
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Overtime and travel may be required to support achievement of objectives.
