About the role
- Japanese PDF annotation expert creating structural maps and exact transcriptions for Mercor’s document AI training data. Working remotely on diverse real-world Japanese documents.
Responsibilities
- Find a publicly accessible Japanese PDF in an assigned document type containing at least one multimodal element and record its source
- Identify and bound every meaningful page region, assign component types and reading-order indices
- Link each region to its related figure or table using a parent component identifier
- Transcribe all text exactly as shown, including Japanese scripts, furigana and handwritten content
- Flag illegible source regions
- Capture language, document type, source, page dimensions, and table, formula and handwriting flags
- Review colleagues' work end to end as a second Japanese expert
- Produce diverse, human-authored training data for document AI
Requirements
- Native Japanese speaker with full command of kanji, hiragana and katakana, including furigana and variant character forms
- Professional experience in interpretation, journalism, transcription, translation, editorial work, or comparable document-intensive work
- Character-level accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to apply a taxonomy consistently across hundreds of pages
- Comfortable working with vertical text, multi-column newspapers, exam papers and handwritten forms
- Fluent Japanese required; all annotation and transcription work is performed in Japanese
- Independent contractor status
- Unable to support H1-B or STEM OPT candidates at this time
