About the role
- Japanese PDF annotation expert mapping document structure and transcribing complex pages for Mercor. Building human-authored training data to improve frontier AI systems.
Responsibilities
- Open and check provided PDF annotation tasks
- Confirm pages are in Japanese, legible, contain real content, and have no personal details
- Identify and bound every meaningful page region
- Assign component types and reading-order indexes
- Link regions to related figures or tables using parent component identifiers
- Transcribe all text faithfully in Japanese script, including kanji, hiragana, katakana, furigana and handwritten content
- Flag illegible source regions
- Capture language, document type, source, page dimensions, and table, formula and handwriting flags
- Review colleagues' work end to end as an experienced annotator
- Produce human-authored structural maps and transcriptions for AI training data
Requirements
- Native fluency in Japanese
- Full command of kanji, hiragana, katakana, furigana and variant character forms
- Professional experience in interpretation, journalism, transcription, translation, editorial work, or comparable document-intensive work
- Character-level accuracy in Japanese transcription
- Ability to apply a taxonomy consistently across hundreds of pages
- Comfort with vertical text, multi-column newspapers, exam papers and handwritten forms
- Japanese-language document annotation, labeling, grading, bilingual evaluation, transcription, localization, MTPE, subtitling, bilingual QA, OCR correction, post-editing, typesetting, copy-editing, proofreading, digitization, Unicode normalization, Japanese input methods, full-width and half-width forms, and kanji variant handling are nice-to-have specialties
- Must be an independent contractor
- H1-B and STEM OPT candidates are not supported
