About the role

Backend Engineer scaling Bluehost’s hosting platform for small businesses. Building Python services and APIs while modernizing Linux, MySQL, and legacy Perl systems.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain backend services and internal APIs in Python
Own the features shipped
Administer and troubleshoot Linux-based production systems
Perform performance tuning and root-cause investigation
Write, optimize, and maintain MySQL queries and schemas for high-traffic, production-scale data
Use AI across development, debugging, testing, and unfamiliar-code workflows, reviewing generated output before release
Ship reliable, well-tested features with senior engineers and cross-functional teams
Work across legacy and modern codebases, including Perl-based components
Contribute to gradual modernization of legacy systems
Participate in technical design decisions
Own production troubleshooting and participate in on-call rotation as needed
Learn and apply incident response practices

3-5 years of backend development experience
Strong working knowledge of Python and Linux systems administration
Solid MySQL experience, including writing queries, designing schemas, and diagnosing performance issues
AI-augmented delivery experience across the development lifecycle
Ability to select appropriate AI models for different problems and determine when not to use them
Ability to review AI-generated code, understand its failure modes, and follow customer-data, security, compliance, provenance, and licensing boundaries
Experience working in a collaborative, Agile development environment with sprint and release discipline
Demonstrated troubleshooting instincts and ownership of production issues under pressure, including as a front-line responder
Familiarity with Perl and cPanel environments is beneficial but not required
