About the role

  • Legal Counsel advising Peel Region, which delivers essential public services, on litigation, construction disputes, procurement, and municipal legal risk. Managing disputes, negotiations, and court proceedings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic legal advice and representation in dispute resolution and litigation matters
  • Manage litigation files through investigations, pleadings, discoveries, mediations, hearings, trials, and settlement negotiations
  • Represent the Region before courts, tribunals, arbitrators, mediators, and other adjudicative bodies
  • Advise Regional departments on procurement-related legal risks, contractual disputes, claims management, and dispute avoidance
  • Provide legal counsel on construction matters, project disputes, contract enforcement, delay claims, deficiency claims, and lien proceedings
  • Lead negotiations and facilitate dispute resolution
  • Prepare and review legal opinions, pleadings, factums, motions, settlement agreements, correspondence, and litigation documents
  • Assess legal risk and develop proactive strategies protecting the Region’s interests
  • Build relationships with client departments, external legal counsel, the public, senior leadership, and government partners
  • Manage multiple litigation and advisory files while meeting critical deadlines
  • Provide clear, concise, well-reasoned legal advice supported by research and analysis
  • Monitor developments in litigation, construction law, procurement, administrative law, and municipal legislation

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) or Juris Doctor degree
  • Call to the Ontario Bar and membership in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Minimum of 1 year relevant experience as a practicing Ontario lawyer or equivalent
  • International experience will be considered
  • Knowledge of municipal legislation and businesses is an asset
  • Off-site work location must be within the province of Ontario
