About the role

  • Senior forester leading forest research and sustainable management planning for Nova Scotia’s natural resources. Developing science-based tools, policies, reports, and guidance with forestry stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a forest research group in developing and delivering research plans, projects, tasks, forest management tools, reports, and guidance documents
  • Provide scientific and technical expertise and advice to department senior management, directors, managers, and forestry stakeholders
  • Represent the Department on provincial, national, and international committees and working groups
  • Collaborate with government, university, and research institute scientists to promote science-based forest management decisions
  • Produce and publish scientific papers and reports related to research projects, policies, and guidelines
  • Lead or assist in developing strategic plans, management groups, and policy documents guiding provincial forest management planning decisions

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Forestry with 8 years of related experience, or a Master's degree in Forestry with 6 years of related experience
  • Equivalent combination of training, education, and experience will be considered
  • Strong working knowledge of forest mensuration
  • Understanding of scientific methodology, experimental design, data collection, and analysis
  • Expertise in tree silvics of Acadian and Boreal forests
  • Knowledge of forest management planning processes
  • Willingness to work in office and field environments
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills for managing multiple ongoing projects
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Experience with PSP establishment, measuring, and monitoring programs
  • Knowledge of national, provincial, and regional forestry issues and topics
  • Ability to supervise technical and professional forestry staff
  • Experience with statistical software, resource modeling software including Python, and ArcGIS
  • Broad knowledge of forestry practices and principles, and forestry and wildlife policies, regulations, and guidelines
  • Ability to initiate, formulate, design, and undertake complex research or investigative projects with minimal direction and under stringent time constraints
  • Experience using remotely piloted aircraft systems (drones) for forestry purposes
  • Successful completion of applicable background checks and credential confirmation
