About the role
- Economics reporter covering Canadian government and fiscal policy from The Globe and Mail’s Ottawa bureau. Filing breaking news, enterprise stories and features for Canadian audiences.
Responsibilities
- Cover breaking and live economic and fiscal policy news from Ottawa
- Frequently pitch fresh, compelling story ideas
- Develop and maintain sources in government and business
- Write clearly and concisely on deadline
- Work with colleagues across the department and wider newsroom to generate story ideas and enrich coverage
- File source-based scoops, breaking and scheduled news, enterprise reporting, and features
- Think beyond standard storytelling formats
- Participate in Globe subscriber events
- Report to the politics and economy editor
- Work closely with the collaborative economics and business reporting team in The Globe’s Ottawa bureau
Requirements
- At least five years’ experience as a reporter in a daily news organization
- Solid news judgment with a track record of enterprise work
- Ability to translate fiscal and economic policy into engaging prose for The Globe’s audience
- Familiarity with political reporting and economics
- Strong writing with versatile range, from hard news to human-interest feature to explanatory
- Comfortable working in a variety of formats, including live blogs, newsletters, video and audio
- Cover letter with three links to previous work
- Resume written by the applicant, not AI
- Minimum of two days a week in the Ottawa office
