About the role

  • Energy and politics reporter covering Ottawa’s economic and energy policy for The Globe and Mail, Canada’s national newspaper. Filing breaking news, scoops, enterprise stories and features.

Responsibilities

  • Cover breaking and live economic and energy policy news from Ottawa
  • Frequently pitch fresh, compelling story ideas
  • Develop and maintain sources in government and business
  • Write clearly and concisely on deadline
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the department and wider newsroom to generate story ideas and enrich coverage
  • Work with the Ottawa bureau and Western Canada bureaus
  • File source-based scoops, breaking and scheduled news, enterprise reporting, and features
  • Think beyond standard storytelling formats
  • Participate in Globe subscriber events
  • Report to the politics and economy editor

Requirements

  • At least five years’ experience as a reporter in a daily news organization
  • Solid news judgment with a track record of enterprise work
  • Ability to translate economic policy into engaging prose for The Globe’s audience
  • Familiarity with political reporting and economics
  • Strong writing with versatile range, from hard news to human-interest feature to explanatory
  • Comfortable working in a variety of formats, including live blogs, newsletters, video and audio
  • Resume written by the candidate, not AI
  • Cover letter and three links to previous work
  • Minimum of two days a week in the Ottawa office
