About the role
- Energy and politics reporter covering Ottawa’s economic and energy policy for The Globe and Mail, Canada’s national newspaper. Filing breaking news, scoops, enterprise stories and features.
Responsibilities
- Cover breaking and live economic and energy policy news from Ottawa
- Frequently pitch fresh, compelling story ideas
- Develop and maintain sources in government and business
- Write clearly and concisely on deadline
- Collaborate with colleagues across the department and wider newsroom to generate story ideas and enrich coverage
- Work with the Ottawa bureau and Western Canada bureaus
- File source-based scoops, breaking and scheduled news, enterprise reporting, and features
- Think beyond standard storytelling formats
- Participate in Globe subscriber events
- Report to the politics and economy editor
Requirements
- At least five years’ experience as a reporter in a daily news organization
- Solid news judgment with a track record of enterprise work
- Ability to translate economic policy into engaging prose for The Globe’s audience
- Familiarity with political reporting and economics
- Strong writing with versatile range, from hard news to human-interest feature to explanatory
- Comfortable working in a variety of formats, including live blogs, newsletters, video and audio
- Resume written by the candidate, not AI
- Cover letter and three links to previous work
- Minimum of two days a week in the Ottawa office
