About the role

  • Research Assistant supporting University of Alberta laboratory operations and biomedical research. Managing inventory, safety compliance, hazardous waste, equipment maintenance, and student laboratory support.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the daily operations of the Elahi Lab at the Katz Group Centre
  • Coordinate ordering, tracking, and maintenance of laboratory reagents, consumables, and materials
  • Ensure materials are stored according to manufacturing and safety standards and University policies
  • Liaise with departmental members regarding laboratory safety, equipment maintenance, and waste disposal
  • Maintain safety documentation, coordinate routine inspections, and monitor monthly equipment maintenance schedules
  • Ensure adherence to WHMIS, institutional EHS policies, and applicable federal/provincial regulations
  • Label waste containers and arrange scheduled pickups with institutional waste disposal services
  • Ensure compliance with hazardous-waste storage limits and timelines
  • Train lab members on proper disposal procedures
  • Monitor and restock sharps bins and biohazard bags
  • Assist with regulatory audit or inspection documentation
  • Maintain a clean, organized laboratory environment
  • Serve as a technical resource for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Assist the PI with hands-on training for undergraduate students and volunteers
  • Actively participate in research activities

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field; Biological or Medical Sciences preferred
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience considered
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in an academic research environment
  • 1 to 3 years of experience maintaining lab operations
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in inventory tracking and management
  • Proactive organizational, time management, problem-solving, and multitasking skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize work effectively
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and communicate clearly and credibly
  • Superior interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills
  • Professionalism and ability to build collaborative working relationships
  • Ability to develop creative and efficient solutions and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Initiative, superior attention to detail, and high accuracy
  • Working knowledge of relevant Faculty/Department and UAPPOL policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Ability to perform in-depth searches using databases, online retrieval services, internet search tools, and websites
  • Beginner-level knowledge of MS Office applications, Google applications, Zoom/video conferencing, website maintenance, and PeopleSoft (Campus Solutions)
