About the role
- CRAFT Technician implementing equipment and operations for University of Toronto’s microfluidic research facilities. Supporting laboratory users, device manufacturing, safety, and technical procedures.
Responsibilities
- Work in a multidisciplinary technical team operating the CRAFT facilities, including BSL 2 tissue-foundry spaces, cleanrooms, and the Diagnostic Horizons Laboratory
- Work with the CRAFT Operations Supervisor to plan and execute the new Diagnostic Horizons Laboratory facility
- Implement incoming equipment for PCB manufacturing, mechanical testing, 3D printing, device packaging, sterilization, and 3D textile printing
- Support day-to-day facility operations and fee-for-service work, primarily involving microfluidic device manufacturing
- Explain and demonstrate experiment setups and laboratory techniques to students and employees
- Apply established standards when providing laboratory access to users
- Document and maintain standard operating procedures
- Provide orientations on laboratory equipment, procedures, and practices
- Prepare, assemble, and set up materials, equipment, and supplies for teaching and research laboratories
- Troubleshoot issues identified through testing or user feedback
- Maintain equipment and supply inventory
- Test and analyze new or upgraded software and hardware
- Determine technical requirements for fabrication projects
- Provide safety training and ensure adherence to safety procedures and standards
Requirements
- Advanced College Diploma (3 years) in engineering and/or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
- Minimum four (4) years of working experience, including laboratory experience
- Minimum two (2) years of laboratory experience in industry and/or academia
- Minimum two (2) years of direct experience using CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or equivalent
- Minimum two (2) years of relevant experience with microfluidic device manufacturing equipment and techniques, including 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC milling, PCB manufacturing, hot embossing, or equivalent technologies
- Experience preparing, following, and revising Standard Operating Procedures for scientific instruments and laboratory processes
- Ability to read and comprehend work instructions and schematics for laboratory research equipment
- Ability to work in a rapidly changing, early lab-setup environment
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions for manual and powered/energized resources
- Strong organizational and time-management skills; ability to meet deadlines, multitask, and adapt to changing priorities
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to explain complex concepts to varied audiences
- Confidentiality, professionalism, judgment, initiative, tact, discretion, and sound decision-making
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders
