About the role
- Senior Technical Lead advancing research computing, cybersecurity, and enterprise IT for the University of Toronto’s biology department. Supporting scientific workflows, administrative systems, and computational teaching.
Responsibilities
- Lead and plan IT projects, including schedules, milestones, deliverables, and reporting mechanisms
- Assess programming requests and system requirements as technical lead
- Analyze and document business requirements and translate them into technical designs
- Develop, test, modify, and evaluate complex programming code for validity, compatibility, security, and standards compliance
- Oversee daily network and server operations, troubleshoot complex issues, and implement security measures
- Execute and maintain security controls aligned with University guidelines and departmental requirements
- Develop and maintain administrative systems and automated workflows
- Build, configure, and maintain departmental websites and collaboration platforms
- Provide senior research-computing and enterprise IT leadership for advanced scientific computing and administrative digital transformation, including safe AI technologies
- Lead departmental cybersecurity initiatives, including risk assessments, vulnerability mitigation, secure system design, identity and access management, and incident response coordination
- Advise faculty and research teams and liaise with institutional IT on scalable, secure, and reproducible computational research environments
- Design and maintain research computing workflows and data-processing pipelines, including scripting, containerization, deployment, monitoring, and performance optimization
- Analyze business processes and develop automated solutions, integrations, databases, and workflows
- Administer departmental network infrastructure across multiple buildings
- Manage departmental SharePoint and web platforms
- Support researchers with research-computing systems and server configuration throughout project lifecycles
- Support integration of computing into teaching and learning and contribute to computational course development
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience
- Minimum five (5) years of relevant demonstrable experience gathering and translating business requirements into technical solutions, analyzing administrative processes, and designing integrations and workflows
- Advanced programming and scripting experience, including developing, testing, troubleshooting, and evaluating complex technical code and automation solutions
- Experience leading complex IT infrastructure, research computing environments, business systems analysis, enterprise applications, and client-facing technology services
- Experience leading and planning IT projects, including developing schedules, coordinating deliverables, and supporting implementations
- Experience with Python, R, MATLAB, Julia, Linux shell scripting, Jupyter notebooks, and container platforms such as Docker and Singularity/Apptainer
- Experience designing and supporting HPC environments, including compute clusters, GPU-enabled systems, Slurm, and parallel computing workflows
- Experience managing research servers and virtualized environments, including Linux/Windows administration, virtualization platforms, systems monitoring, and performance optimization
- Experience administering research data storage infrastructure, backup and archival systems, secure data transfer solutions, and storage optimization using NetApp, TrueNAS, Veeam, or cloud storage technologies
- Strong systems and network administration experience, including assessing security, risk, and integrity and implementing security controls
- Strong technical experience with SQL, SharePoint, Microsoft Power Platform, APIs, and scripting languages
- Experience providing technical consultation, documentation, training, workshops, bootcamps, and end-user support in research and academic computing environments
- Experience training end users and providing guidance on supported systems and applications
- Experience liaising with faculty, staff, students, ITS, IIT Services, and external technical specialists
