About the role

  • Complaints Director overseeing pharmacy complaints, investigations, and regulatory compliance for Alberta’s pharmacy regulator. Leading teams, legal referrals, policy development, and public protection initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill the Complaints Director responsibilities prescribed in the Health Professions Act and Pharmacy and Drug Act
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a continuous improvement process for the complaints resolution process
  • Provide direction and guidance to legal counsel on matters referred to a Hearing
  • Facilitate correction of contributing factors and causes of complaints and recommend recurrence-prevention actions
  • Manage the system for receiving and resolving concerns about regulated member practice and licensed pharmacies
  • Assist in hiring and training contracted investigators
  • Supervise and provide leadership to Complaints Resolution Advisors and investigators
  • Report complaints matters externally in the annual report and internally to Council, senior leadership, and program leaders
  • Address regulated member incapacity and manage return to practice during rehabilitation
  • Provide complaints perspective and support to interested parties
  • Engage in provincial and national forums addressing prescription drug misuse
  • Liaise with regulators and external groups on regulatory and complaints issues
  • Support the provincial government during reviews and updates to the complaints process
  • Work with community groups, elected officials, and law enforcement on professional conduct and pharmacy operation matters
  • Assist with interpretation of and compliance with pharmacy legislation
  • Perform the external portion of the ACP Privacy Officer role with Alberta’s Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner
  • Participate in student education as required
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and regulated members
  • Contribute to policies related to pharmacy practice and pharmacy operations
  • Lead development, implementation, and evaluation of ACP policies and programs using complaints information
  • Perform other duties as required

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Alberta College of Pharmacy
  • Seven to ten years’ experience in pharmacy practice
  • Three to five years’ experience in a supervisory role
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of government policy and applicable legislation, regulations, bylaws, code of ethics, and standards of practice
  • Experience in monitoring and quality improvement of pharmacy practice, data analysis, and identification of measures and benchmarks considered an asset
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Analytical, systematic, and thorough approach to complex issues
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to meet tight timelines
  • Excellent communication and mediation skills
  • Ability to balance compassion and professionalism within a regulatory environment
  • Ability to make independent decisions and provide informed recommendations on complex issues
  • Flexibility to respond to time-sensitive matters outside regular work hours
  • Coaching and mentoring skills
