About the role
- Senior Layer1 Software Engineer developing control software for Arista Networks’ client-to-cloud networking products. Designing physical connectivity features, telemetry, testing, and hardware integrations.
Responsibilities
- Interface with customers, product management, and hardware engineers to develop innovative Layer1 features
- Architect, design, and manage development of Layer1 features
- Develop and maintain features using C, C++, and Python
- Review and contribute to functional and design specifications
- Build automated tests and test infrastructure
- Work with hardware and manufacturing teams to bring new Layer1 components, including PHYs and transceivers, to market
- Collaborate with hardware engineers to design software control interfaces for Layer1 components
- Provide technical leadership across features, projects, and tools
- Analyze, mitigate, and fix problems in customer networks with Customer Support Engineers and customers
- Analyze system test problems and provide fixes
- Mentor new and junior engineers
Requirements
- BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering plus 8 years of experience, or MS plus 6 years, or Ph.D. plus 3 years, or equivalent work experience
- Expert knowledge of C or C++ and Python
- Knowledge of UNIX or Linux
- Applied understanding of software engineering principles
- Strong problem-solving and software troubleshooting skills
- Ability to design solutions and implement features independently
- Ability to work in small teams
- Knowledge of digital communication technologies such as modulation and signal encoding schemes is a plus
- Understanding of IP networking and/or distributed systems is a plus
- Experience working with low-level hardware components is a plus
