About the role

  • Senior Linux Kernel Engineer developing EOS kernel features, tests, and CPU support for Arista Networks’ data-center networking products. Integrating upstream kernels, qualifying hardware, and resolving customer network issues.

Responsibilities

  • Track ongoing developments in the Linux Kernel and identify features and functionality of interest to Arista products and internal development needs
  • Develop and maintain EOS Kernel features and tests using C, C++ and Python
  • Review and contribute to functional and design specifications
  • Build automated tests and test infrastructure to validate features
  • Work with hardware engineers and vendors to qualify CPUs, NICs, and other kernel-dependent hardware components for integration into Arista products
  • Contribute features to the mainline Linux Kernel with the Kernel community
  • Integrate new Kernel versions for EOS and internal development with a team of Kernel engineers
  • Provide technical leadership across features, projects, and tools
  • Analyze, mitigate, and fix problems in customer networks with Customer Support Engineers and customers
  • Analyze System Test Engineer problems and provide fixes
  • Mentor new and junior engineers
  • Own projects from definition through deployment and customer interactions, ensuring delivery quality

Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering plus 8 years of experience, or MS plus 6 years, or Ph.D. plus 3 years, or equivalent work experience
  • Expert knowledge and extensive experience programming in C
  • Knowledge of C++ and Python desirable
  • Significant hands-on experience troubleshooting issues, fixing bugs, and developing Linux kernel features
  • Familiarity with Linux kernel architecture, design, and implementation
  • Familiarity with the upstream Linux community’s patching process and procedures
  • Understanding of IP networking architecture, design, and principles
  • Applied understanding of modern software engineering principles and practices
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong software design and implementation skills
  • Ability to work independently and in small teams
  • Ability to communicate articulately and document designs and implementations clearly and concisely
  • Familiarity with x86 and ARM CPU architectures
