About the role

  • Senior Controls Systems Software Designer developing custom automation and test systems for ATS Industrial Automation. Integrating PLC, robotics, vision, motion, and SCADA technologies while leading controls projects and mentoring team members.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop customer- and project-specific PLC and/or PC-based software programs using ATS programming methods
  • Plan and lead projects with responsibility for project teams, schedules, milestones, and budgets
  • Contribute to machine concepts and integrate control software with electrical and mechanical systems
  • Program PLCs to interface with SCADA systems including Ignition, ATS SAMS, and ATS Test Executive
  • Reverse-engineer and write PLC code from scratch
  • Select, test, and integrate robots, I/O, analog devices, motion controllers, sensors, vision systems, lasers, and other hardware/software components
  • Debug and commission control systems at the facility and customer sites
  • Travel to domestic and international customer locations for site acceptance testing, up to 20% per year
  • Improve controls integration methods to enhance safety and functionality and reduce cost
  • Collaborate with customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers, electricians, and control systems teams
  • Test machine functionality and verify software completeness
  • Provide project documentation and customer training
  • Advise customers as a controls subject matter expert
  • Mentor department members and improve team capability
  • Meet assigned team-member KPIs for budget, schedule, quality, and continuous improvement
  • Assist with Team Leader responsibilities and periodically supervise software development and integration
  • Communicate controls-task time estimates and resource requirements to Team Leaders and Project Managers
  • Follow ATS ethical, health, safety, and environmental requirements

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree specializing in Mechatronics, Systems, Electrical, or Computer Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience programming PLCs and HMIs using Allen Bradley/Rockwell Studio 5000 Logix Designer or Siemens TIA Portal
  • 3 years of hands-on experience in an automation/controls environment working with SCADA and MES systems
  • Proficiency understanding programs written in structured text, including Visual Basic, C#, and Python
  • Strong programming, mechanical, and electrical problem-solving skills
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting instrumentation such as power supplies, meters, sensors, and safety switches using vendor software and interfaces
  • Experience working in Just-In-Time environments and on mission-critical systems
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Hands-on understanding and experience with robotics, control systems, and machine operation
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to meet health, safety, and environmental procedures and legislative requirements
  • Ability to use required protective equipment and attend required health, safety, and environmental training
