About the role

  • Manager overseeing a data science team at Aviva Canada, focusing on data-driven innovations and collaborations with business partners for growth opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a high-performing technical team focused on data science.
  • Provide learning and growth opportunities to the team based on the manager's technical proficiency in data science and actuarial science.
  • Oversee the development of data science products, models and other data-driven outputs while supplying in a technical capacity when vital.
  • Ensure tight-knit collaboration with all relevant partners, technical teams, and users across the organization.
  • Straddle the worlds of insurance professionals, data scientists and engineers to prioritize data-driven solutions.
  • Work closely with business partners to understand day-to-day challenges and key areas of opportunity for innovation and growth.
  • Engage directly with users, empathize with their experience, and use data to advise decisions.
  • Provision of data innovation, support, and insights to our key business areas.
  • Model monitoring to ensure the ongoing quality of pricing models.
  • The development of tools that give non-technical users accesses to ingestible data & insights.
  • Smoother integration of data science into crucial business areas, either as novel entries or improvements to existing processes or tools.
  • Drive long term strategic direction of team through ownership mentality.
  • Communicating and presenting data science solutions, results, and outcomes to a VP level.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Data Science, Actuarial Science or other related fields, or equivalent experience.
  • At least five years of experience working in a Data Science or Actuarial Science driven organization or team.
  • Expert proficiency in at least one programming language, preferably Python.
  • A proficiency is sufficiently strong enough to mentor.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort communicating sophisticated ideas appropriately for senior leadership and non-technical audiences.
  • Understanding of UI/UX design and how it impacts the user experience.
  • Ability to assess and improve the usability and design of a solution.
