About the role

  • Electrical Estimator preparing budgets, cost plans, tenders, and preconstruction estimates for Canem, a Canadian electrical and mechanical contractor. Based in Calgary, Edmonton, or Red Deer, Alberta.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate estimating and subcontractor costing during budgeting and estimating stages
  • Develop estimates in accordance with company procedures, including takeoffs
  • Solicit pricing from subcontractors and suppliers
  • Determine general expenses and provide input into margins and fees
  • Review project documents and analyze project requirements
  • Identify inherent risks and opportunities and develop strategies for a competitive edge
  • Clarify issues with clients and consultants
  • Develop preliminary project construction schedules for pricing time-related activities
  • Prepare estimate summaries and participate in detailed estimate reviews with management
  • Lead or participate in estimate closing and tender submission
  • Assist with post-tender submissions and negotiations
  • Participate in project development activities, including scope definition, preconstruction planning, control estimate development, and delivery
  • Provide preconstruction services, including preliminary budgets, cost plans, and value engineering opportunities
  • Identify leads and securement opportunities through construction-industry contacts
  • Maintain labour-rate, material-pricing, and project-cost databases
  • Prepare conceptual estimates using historical data
  • Create and maintain benchmark estimate values
  • Manage project budgets and update them as required by project teams

Requirements

  • Experience or knowledge sufficient to develop accurate electrical estimates and subcontractor costing
  • Ability to perform quantity takeoffs
  • Ability to solicit and evaluate pricing from subcontractors and suppliers
  • Ability to determine general expenses and provide input into margins/fees
  • Ability to review project documents and analyze project requirements
  • Ability to identify project risks and opportunities and develop competitive strategies
  • Ability to work with clients and consultants on clarifications
  • Ability to develop preliminary construction schedules for pricing
  • Ability to prepare estimate summaries and participate in management reviews
  • Ability to lead or participate in estimate closing and tender submission
