About the role
- Marine Designer Technologist producing ship and submarine drawings, models, surveys, and repair specifications. Supporting BMT’s engineering consultancy in delivering safer, sustainable marine solutions.
Responsibilities
- Execute design and modelling work supporting client taskings for small to large platforms
- Support the Capability department in providing engineering services to internal and external customers
- Independently undertake technical work, coordinating with colleagues and contributing substantially to assigned projects
- Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team
- Undertake engineering activities contributing to best practice under senior staff guidance
- Work within BMT Quality Management System processes and procedures
- Adopt coaching and mentoring from senior staff and support mentorship of junior staff
- Contribute to positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team-building and wellness activities
- Produce ship drawings including general arrangements, structural drawings and details, equipment layouts, system schematics, piping arrangements, electrical wire diagrams, fabrication drawings and installation drawings
- Apply CAD standards, drawing conventions, title block requirements, revision control and configuration management procedures
- Conduct ship or submarine surveys and site verification activities
- Validate existing structures and system configurations and incorporate as-fitted details into drawing packages
- Produce survey reports using client, Class or designated standard formats
- Apply IMO regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders
- Develop design or technical specifications for complex repairs
- Assess structures and systems against relevant codes and standards for repairs, changes and refits
- Provide input to risk assessments for design or repair specifications
Requirements
- A College Technologist Diploma in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline
- A minimum of five (5) years of relevant computer aided design (CAD) and drafting experience producing engineering, detailed design or production drawings for ships, submarines or other marine assets
- Advanced expertise in 2D drafting and 3D modelling software packages including AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino, or similar
- Provincial certification for Engineering Technologists
- Eligible for a Canadian security clearance
- Experience supporting a Marine Drawing Office (desirable)
- Practical experience working with marine platform systems (small or large boats) (desirable)
- Experience working in a fast-paced commercial shipyard environment (desirable)
- Experience and knowledge of Department of Defence drawing templates and standards (desirable)
