About the role
- Nurse Practitioner providing primary healthcare to diverse students at Wilfrid Laurier University. Managing complex physical and mental health needs across Brantford and Milton campuses.
Responsibilities
- Provide patient-centred primary healthcare to a diverse student population at the Brantford and Milton campuses
- Perform comprehensive health assessments, including health histories and physical examinations
- Manage acute and chronic medical conditions, therapeutic care, health promotion, and illness prevention
- Assess urgency and determine the appropriate level of care
- Facilitate referrals, determine follow-up, and develop individualized care plans
- Prioritize diagnostic tests and procedures and interpret relevant results
- Document assessments, interventions, evaluations, and third-party correspondence accurately and promptly
- Prescribe pharmaceutical and non-pharmacological therapeutic interventions within NP scope
- Counsel clients on drug therapy, side effects, interactions, symptom management, rehabilitation, and lifestyle changes
- Consult and collaborate with physicians, NPs, RNs, counsellors, and allied health professionals
- Participate in case conferences and support students at risk of harm or deterioration
- Deliver care in person, remotely, by telephone, and virtually where appropriate
- Support medical staff and help ensure safe, effective patient care
- Participate in developing, implementing, and evaluating campus health services and health promotion programs
- Support Student Wellness Centre policies, procedures, compliance, and best-practice development
- Maintain medical records according to professional standards and PHIPA guidelines
- Liaise with student support services and develop relationships with campus and community resources
Requirements
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Nurse Practitioner (Registered Nurse in the Extended Class) with no practice restrictions
- Minimum of three years’ experience working as a primary care NP supporting clients with complex needs
- Certification and membership in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse Extended Class (Nurse Practitioner)
- Completion of a Nurse Practitioner Certificate in Primary Health Care
- Must obtain own Liability Insurance
- Demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of health
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with clients in a non-judgmental manner and practice active listening
- Ability to perform to maximum scope of practice and recognize acuity/presentations beyond scope
- Demonstrated ability to manage crises effectively and professionally
- Strong independent work and consultative skills
- Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, organizational, interpersonal, written, and report-writing skills
- Ability to work effectively and respectfully in a collaborative, inter-professional team environment
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of electronic medical record/billing systems
- Basic CPR and first aid certification required
- Flexibility to work outside traditional hours when required
- Masters of Nursing Degree preferred
- Experience working with diverse communities preferred
- Membership in NPAO or RNAO is an asset
- Microsoft Office proficiency is an asset
- Practice Solutions proficiency is an asset
