About the role

  • Library services associate supporting research assistance, circulation, and patron access at Wilfrid Laurier University. Coordinating resource sharing, student assistants, equipment, and library security.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-person and online front-line Library reference and circulation services
  • Assist, advise, and train students, faculty, staff, alumni, and public users in identifying, evaluating, and using library services and research resources
  • Handle circulation activities including charging, renewing, and discharging library materials, collecting fines, and updating patron records
  • Provide triage for complicated reference questions and refer users to librarians as appropriate
  • Assist users with library equipment and monitor equipment status and service calls
  • Interview, train, coach, direct, and delegate tasks to student assistants
  • Maintain library service policies, procedures, standards, and consistency
  • Coordinate evening building security and respond to building, safety, security, and emergency issues
  • Maintain knowledge of Library, University, and Omni consortium services and policies
  • Participate in training, meetings, statistics, user guides, web content, supplies, guidelines, procedures, and special projects
  • Coordinate loan activities and resource sharing between Laurier and Omni member libraries, including searching, retrieval, processing, and delivery preparation
  • Assist with Scan on Demand, Mail on Demand, and similar operational tasks
  • Troubleshoot bibliographic, metadata, circulation, barcode, location, and patron-request problems
  • Coordinate book returns and materials management, including sorting, relabeling, and shelf reading
  • Create borrower records and virtual registrations for special and non-standard user groups
  • Determine borrowing privileges for special user groups

Requirements

  • University undergraduate degree
  • Demonstrated experience with university-level research and writing
  • 2 years of public service job experience, preferably in a college or university library
  • Strong public service interest and skills
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, communication, listening, and multitasking skills
  • Ability and ongoing commitment to adapt and learn continuously
  • Ability to interact diplomatically with the public, respect privacy, and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to handle pressure, stress, and conflict calmly, tactfully, and discreetly
  • Ability to be creative and take initiative in finding solutions to patron queries
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, delegate appropriately, set priorities, and accomplish tasks effectively
  • Demonstrated good judgment and ability to recognize limits of knowledge and refer issues to senior colleagues
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Above-average computer skills, including standard office software such as Office 365
  • Strong bibliographic and Internet searching skills
  • General understanding of reconciling cash flow
  • Understanding and sensitivity to service needs of users with diverse backgrounds, including people with disabilities
  • Experience with library-specific software and databases is an asset
  • Additional college degree/diploma or technical library training is an asset
