About the role

  • Spectrum Engineer optimizing CBC/Radio-Canada broadcasting, RF coverage, and transmission infrastructure. Performing spectrum analyses, licensing, compliance studies, and wireless network evaluations.

Responsibilities

  • Complete coverage analyses to optimize radio and digital television station parameters
  • Write technical briefs according to ISED Broadcasting Rules and Procedures using Python programming
  • Submit applications for broadcasting certificates and licenses to ISED and CRTC
  • Develop programs and scripts to automate tasks, implement calculation methods, and accelerate engineering report production
  • Travel to cities in Canada to perform signal measurements and assess broadcasting coverage
  • Perform RF exposure analyses and simulations for transmission sites under Safety Code 6
  • Perform RF measurements at transmission sites
  • Complete Safety Code 6 compliance reports and recommend measures to maintain compliance
  • Perform point-to-point link analyses using Pathloss
  • Support C-Band, Ku-Band, LEO, and 5G Broadcast satellite distribution systems through analyses, evaluations, and licensing requests
  • Evaluate technologies and write comprehensive technical reports
  • Simulate and measure Wi-Fi coverage using Ekahau and support telecommunications teams with wireless network implementation and optimization
  • Monitor technology and Canadian radio-frequency spectrum allocation developments and assess impacts on infrastructure
  • Participate in national and international broadcasting-community meetings through industry associations

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent
  • Member of Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (P.Eng., C.P.I.), Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), or another provincial professional engineering association—or eligible for membership (required)
  • Five years of experience in broadcasting or telecommunications (asset)
  • Good knowledge of electromagnetic wave propagation, antennas, transmission systems, and wireless telecommunications
  • Knowledge of AM and FM radio, DTV, point-to-point and satellite links, or other RF transceiver systems
  • Knowledge of production RF systems, including microphones, cameras, and IFBs
  • Knowledge of ISED technical broadcasting rules and procedures, CRTC policies and regulations, and the Canadian Broadcasting Act (asset)
  • Hands-on experience with a spectrum analyzer and other technical equipment
  • Fluency in English (required); French is an important asset
  • Strong programming skills and interest in Python and C++ (asset)
  • Skills and interest in AI tools including Gemini, Copilot, and Claude for script and software development
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with peers
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple mandates
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to simplify technical concepts for non-technical audiences
  • Willingness to travel within Canada
  • Valid driver's license
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing
