About the role
- Senior Transmission Planning Consultant leading advanced grid studies for E Source, a utility research, analytics, and technology firm. Advising utilities on reliability, planning, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage transmission planning studies, including stability, power flow, reliability, short-circuit, and congestion management analyses
- Serve as the primary client contact, driving project scope, methodologies, and deliverables
- Oversee and execute advanced transmission planning studies for electric utilities, ISOs/RTOs, cooperatives, and other industry stakeholders
- Provide technical oversight, quality assurance, and guidance to junior engineers and consultants
- Prepare and present detailed technical reports documenting assumptions, methodologies, and results
- Engage directly with clients to define objectives, design methodologies, and deliver actionable results
- Contribute to business development through proposals, client meetings, and thought leadership
- Collaborate with senior leadership to shape service offerings and enhance technical capabilities
- Mentor and train less experienced staff, fostering knowledge transfer and professional development
- Support client decision-making and regulatory compliance
Requirements
- B.S. in electrical engineering or a related field
- M.S. with 12+ years, Ph.D. with 8+ years, or B.S. with 15+ years of relevant experience in transmission planning, operations, or consulting
- In-depth knowledge of transmission system planning processes, methodologies, and industry practices
- Experience with transient stability, short-circuit, voltage, production costing, TPL compliance, and generator interconnection analysis
- Strong competency in PSS/E (required)
- Strong experience with Transmission Adequacy & Reliability Assessment (TARA), including reliability and contingency (N-1) analysis, flowgate analysis, and assessing import/export limits for resource adequacy
- Familiarity with NERC, FERC, and ISO/RTO requirements and processes
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Proven success managing complex technical studies and project teams
- Clear communication and presentation skills, with experience in client-facing consulting roles
- Experience with Aspen, EasyPower, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, or PROMOD is advantageous
- Experience with harmonics analysis is advantageous
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment
