About the role

  • Staff AI Engineer scaling safe, evaluated agentic AI across Maple’s Canadian on-demand healthcare platform. Defining architecture, governance, observability, and cost controls for product squads.

Responsibilities

  • Build, evaluate, and scale AI features across Maple's healthcare platform
  • Set guardrails, evaluation strategy, and observability standards for AI feature quality, safety, and technical health
  • Shape model and provider strategy, usage patterns, and cost controls
  • Define evaluation strategy, agent execution architecture, and reference patterns
  • Mentor and coach squads and engineers across the organization
  • Partner with Product and Engineering squads on agentic feature development as a senior technical partner and reviewer
  • Co-define AI governance with Security, Privacy, Legal, and Clinical partners, including review criteria, PHI handling expectations, and escalation paths
  • Translate technical AI choices into business outcomes for executive and cross-functional audiences
  • Assess current AI features, evaluation coverage, cost profile, and governance gaps during the first 90 days
  • Publish AI standards and best-practices guidance and establish an evaluation strategy and reference harness
  • Roll out company-wide agent execution architecture, production monitoring, SLOs, cost optimization, evaluation harnesses, and monitoring dashboards

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience
  • 2+ years in a Staff or Principal-level applied AI or ML engineering role
  • Demonstrated ownership of agentic or LLM-powered systems in production, including evaluation, guardrails, and cost and latency tuning at scale
  • Track record designing evaluation strategies for non-deterministic systems, including offline evals, online evals, human-in-the-loop, and regression harnesses
  • Deep understanding of agent execution patterns, including tool use, planning, memory, and orchestration frameworks
  • Experience defining AI quality and monitoring practices, including quality metrics, hallucination and safety controls, drift detection, and incident response
  • Product engineering mindset and hands-on experience with code, prototypes, and reference implementations
  • Ability to mentor senior engineers, set standards across squads, and partner with platform teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication across executive, product, clinical, compliance, and technical audiences
  • Experience or familiarity with LangChain, LangGraph, CopilotKit, AWS Bedrock, OpenAI and Anthropic APIs, LangSmith, Langfuse, ClickHouse, PostgreSQL, Laravel, PHP, MySQL, Amazon DocumentDB, Typesense, Redis, AWS, Terraform, GitHub Actions, Datadog, BugSnag, Jest, PHPUnit, WebDriverIO, and axe-core
  • Successful criminal record check (EPIC) and identity verification; additional employment or education verification may apply depending on role requirements
