About the role
- Civil Superintendent leading heavy earthworks, equipment, roads, and quarry operations for Norpac, a Western Canada geotechnical contractor. Supervising crews and production across Alberta and British Columbia projects.
Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day field supervision and leadership for civil and earthworks operations
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise site preparation, clearing, stripping, excavation, grading, and mass earthmoving activities
- Direct load-haul-dump operations and deploy heavy equipment efficiently
- Manage material movement, placement, stockpiles, dumps, and disposal areas
- Oversee construction and maintenance of access roads, haul roads, temporary roads, ramps, and working platforms
- Coordinate trucking operations, including haul routes, truck allocation, loading/unloading cycles, traffic flow, and production requirements
- Collaborate with equipment operators, truck drivers, foremen, surveyors, engineers, project managers, and subcontractors to maintain production targets
- Monitor daily production, equipment utilization, material quantities, and work progress
- Ensure compliance with project drawings, specifications, schedules, quality requirements, and environmental commitments
- Coordinate with quarry and aggregate operations to ensure material availability
- Develop working knowledge of gravel processing, crushing, screening, stockpiling, and aggregate production
- Assist with quarry development, extraction, material selection, and aggregate handling
- Identify field constraints and develop practical solutions to maintain productivity and schedule
- Participate in daily and weekly planning, equipment requirements, manpower allocation, and material requirements
- Communicate progress, constraints, risks, and upcoming requirements to project management
- Promote safety culture and ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulations
- Conduct or participate in toolbox meetings, pre-job hazard assessments, inspections, and daily coordination meetings
- Monitor site conditions and hazards involving excavation, slopes, haul roads, dumps, heavy equipment, and changing ground conditions
- Support quality control for grade, elevations, compaction, material placement, and project specifications
- Maintain daily records, production reports, equipment reports, and required documentation
- Work effectively in remote, high-production, and changing site conditions
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Civil Superintendent, Earthworks Superintendent, General Superintendent, or equivalent field leadership role
- Significant hands-on experience in heavy civil construction and earthworks
- Strong practical knowledge of site preparation and mass excavation
- Strong practical knowledge of earthmoving and material handling
- Strong practical knowledge of load-haul-dump operations
- Strong practical knowledge of dump and spoil management
- Strong practical knowledge of cut-and-fill operations
- Strong practical knowledge of road and haul-road construction
- Strong practical knowledge of grading and site development
- Strong practical knowledge of trucking and material-hauling logistics
- Strong practical knowledge of heavy equipment operations and production
- Experience coordinating large fleets of excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, rock trucks, articulated trucks, water trucks, and other heavy equipment
- Working knowledge of aggregate, gravel, and quarry operations, including crushing, screening, processing, stockpiling, and material handling
- Strong understanding of construction sequencing, production rates, equipment utilization, and efficient material movement
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, survey information, and project documentation
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to effectively manage crews, subcontractors, equipment operators, and trucking resources
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and environmental compliance
- Ability to work extended hours and/or rotational schedules where required
- Experience with slope stabilization and geohazard mitigation considered an asset
- Exposure to landslide remediation, rockfall mitigation, erosion control, slope reinforcement, or ground stabilization considered an asset
- Experience working around steep terrain, unstable ground, mountainous environments, or other challenging geotechnical conditions considered an asset
- Experience with quarry development or large-scale aggregate production considered an asset
- Experience working on remote or resource-sector projects considered an asset
- Familiarity with GPS/machine-control systems and modern construction technology considered an asset
- Experience with production tracking, quantity measurement, and project reporting considered an asset
- Relevant technical training, trade certification, civil construction education, or equivalent considered an asset
