About the role

  • Law Clerk supporting Intact’s insurance defence litigation practice. Preparing pleadings, discovery materials, expert examinations, trials and arbitrations.

Responsibilities

  • Manage legal practice administration
  • Draft pleadings and application materials
  • Prepare initial undertaking charts, correspond with counsel, review answers and draft motion materials to compel undertaking responses
  • Arrange Independent Examinations, retain experts, prepare expert briefs and coordinate client attendance with counsel
  • Review productions and provide counsel with pre-discovery lists of further productions, documents and information to request
  • Summarize document productions and other materials, including medical records
  • Manage production requests and prepare Affidavits of Records
  • Draft Letters of Instruction and prepare expert retainer materials
  • Prepare for trials and arbitrations
  • Support insureds, adjusters, claims representatives, law clerks, legal assistants and lawyers

Requirements

  • College diploma and/or university degree in a legal program (Paralegal, Law Clerk, Legal Office Administration), or any combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum of three to four years of experience in Insurance Defence Litigation, specifically as a Law Clerk
  • Excellent understanding of tort matters
  • Strong document management skills
  • Ability to learn and use iManage, Citrix, ACL, Nuance and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and execute tasks with quality and fast turnaround
  • Excellent attention to detail, proofreading and drafting skills
  • Excellent communication, listening, organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Eagerness to learn and ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment and take initiative
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when dealing with clients, counsel, insureds and court officials
  • Disciplined approach to work
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada; no Canadian work experience required
