Senior Data Engineer contract role: design/build ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure stack, primarily remote in Canada, occasional onsite in Edmonton.
About the role
- Data Platform Engineer building ingestion pipelines, storage, governance, and observability systems for Movable Ink’s AI-driven marketing personalization platform. Supporting scalable, secure, multi-tenant data services.
Responsibilities
- Design and deliver data ingestion pipelines and infrastructure
- Migrate legacy data lifecycle management to the new platform without disrupting existing data consumers
- Establish and maintain SLIs and SLOs with dashboards and alerting to track platform performance
- Build flexible data storage supporting transactional, analytic, and machine learning workloads
- Implement monitoring, observability, and incident response for event data pipelines and services
- Collaborate with product engineering, analytics, and machine learning teams to define contracts, requirements, and standards
- Design and implement a semantic metadata layer for data classification, discovery, exposure policies, and cross-product reuse
- Architect and deliver a secure, multi-tenant data model supporting client data sharing and isolation
- Report to the Engineering Manager, Data Platform
Requirements
- Ability to learn new technologies, frameworks, and problem domains
- Product- and end-user-focused approach to solving broad problems
- Deep understanding of data governance and data lifecycle management, including quality, lineage, retention, and access control
- Production-scale experience with OLAP/OLTP databases and data warehouses such as Databricks, ClickHouse, or Redshift
- Strong SQL skills, including query writing and optimization
- Experience designing and operating data systems on AWS; GCP experience is a plus
- Experience working in multi-cloud deployment environments
- Proficiency with Docker and Kubernetes
- Ability to integrate legacy platforms with modern architectures through interfaces and migration strategies
- Ability to facilitate system design discussions and document architectural decisions
- Familiarity with Elixir for concurrent, fault-tolerant data services (nice to have)
- Experience with Airflow, Kafka, Apache Flink, or similar streaming technologies (nice to have)
- Hands-on experience with columnar/OLAP databases such as Databricks or ClickHouse (nice to have)
- Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation
- Strong collaboration and communication skills; comfortable leading design discussions and writing technical specifications
