About the role
- Language revitalization specialist advancing Indigenous language resources for Canada’s Indigenous communities. Translating research into practical tools through community engagement and Knowledge Hub projects.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and analyze promising practices, innovations, and emerging trends in Indigenous language revitalization
- Identify opportunities to strengthen language learning, documentation, retention, and intergenerational transmission
- Provide advice and guidance on language revitalization approaches, methodologies, and resources
- Support national and regional initiatives contributing to Indigenous language vitality
- Develop practical resources, toolkits, guides, fact sheets, briefing materials, and knowledge products
- Translate research findings, technical information, and data into accessible, user-friendly materials
- Support dissemination of Indigenous language research, community projects, and innovative practices
- Develop case studies and success stories highlighting community-led language revitalization efforts
- Build and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, language champions, educators, and researchers
- Support engagement activities, information-sharing sessions, webinars, workshops, presentations, and outreach
- Gather community insights and identify emerging language revitalization needs
- Facilitate knowledge exchange between communities and partners
- Work with communities on capacity-bridging initiatives supporting revitalization planning, skills development, and access to resources and tools
- Contribute to projects related to language vitality, documentation, mapping, technology, and preservation
- Coordinate resource development initiatives and manage timelines and deliverables
- Support cross-functional collaboration with research, innovation, communications, and partnerships teams
- Evaluate the effectiveness and use of Knowledge Hub resources and tools
- Promote culturally safe, respectful, and distinctions-based approaches
- Integrate Indigenous knowledge systems and community priorities into Knowledge Hub activities
- Align resource development and knowledge-sharing with Indigenous data sovereignty principles
- Foster ethical and respectful engagement with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and language speakers
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Indigenous Studies, Linguistics, Education, Social Sciences, Public Administration, Community Development, or a related field
- Equivalent combination of education, lived experience, and professional experience will be considered
- Knowledge of Indigenous language revitalization frameworks, practices, and challenges
- Understanding of Indigenous data sovereignty, ethical research principles, and community-led approaches
- Familiarity with language documentation, language learning resources, and knowledge mobilization practices
- Awareness of the Indigenous Languages Act and broader Indigenous language policy landscape
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong relationship-building and facilitation abilities
- Research synthesis and analytical skills
- Project coordination and organizational skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with diverse communities and partners
- Ability to communicate complex concepts in plain language
- Expertise related to Indigenous language documentation approaches, teaching and learning practices, curriculum/resource development, or language transmission strategies
- Knowledge of one or more Indigenous languages is an asset
- Proficiency in an Indigenous language and bilingualism (English/French) are assets
