About the role

  • Superintendent leading PCL Construction’s industrial piping fabrication operations in Nisku. Managing safety, shop flow, quality, scheduling, teams, costs, and shipping.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all field operations to construct the project and oversee on-site construction activities
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the PCL safety program in the fabrication facility
  • Build shop safety culture through mentorship and modelling, focusing on hot work, overhead cranes and rigging, material handling, grinding, radiation safety during RT, and PWHT
  • Work with the fabrication/operations manager and shop team to resolve throughput constraints, work conflicts, and schedule risks
  • Communicate with pipefitters, welders, helpers, and material handlers to ensure productivity, quality, and safety requirements
  • Oversee subcontracted services including NDE, PWHT, coatings, and blasting
  • Liaise with clients, EPC/engineering representatives, inspectors, field construction teams, and office representatives
  • Supervise, direct, coach, train, and mentor shop foremen, general foremen, and leads across shifts or bays
  • Participate in selecting, onboarding, and placing shop staff, including welder qualification testing
  • Own shop flow from material receipt through cutting, fit-up, welding, NDE, PWHT, hydrotest, coatings, and shipping
  • Lead fabrication of process, utility, and pipeline-related piping spools across carbon steel, chrome-moly, stainless, and duplex/alloy materials
  • Develop and execute fabrication plans with project and estimating teams
  • Ensure compliance with the Quality Control Manual, WPS/PQR, welder qualifications, and applicable ASME and CSA codes
  • Maintain material traceability and produce client-ready spool turnover packages
  • Schedule and control shop labour, equipment, consumables, and materials
  • Influence equipment selection and shop methodology, including automated and mechanized welding
  • Track weld repair rates, analyze root causes, and coach welders to reduce rework
  • Review contracts, purchase orders, and client specifications to mitigate risks and support budgets, forecasts, and profitability
  • Coordinate shipping logistics, spool marking, preservation, load planning, dunnage, and tie-downs
  • Pursue improvements in fabrication technology, productivity, automation, and digital tracking

Requirements

  • Journeyperson Steamfitter-Pipefitter or Welder certificate (Red Seal preferred), or a postsecondary diploma or engineering degree in a related discipline
  • NCSO designation (IND) and Gold Seal certification required (CDN)
  • A certificate in negotiation or equivalent experience
  • 15 years of progressive supervisory experience preferred, including significant time in a pipe spool fabrication shop
  • Demonstrated experience as a superintendent or general foreman running a production spool fabrication facility
  • In-depth knowledge of piping codes and welding processes (GTAW, SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, SAW)
  • Knowledge of WPS/PQR requirements and welder qualification
  • Working knowledge of NDE methods (RT, UT/PAUT, MT, PT), PWHT, hydrotesting, and PMI
  • Experience with pressure piping quality programs and regulatory oversight, such as ABSA or the applicable provincial authority
  • Ability to read and interpret piping isometrics, P&IDs, and client specifications
  • Experience scheduling shop loading and tracking productivity using metrics such as diameter-inches and weld repair rate
  • Ability to lead and manage others, including multiple shifts or bays
  • Understanding of contract and specification language and risk mitigation
  • Understanding of collective agreements and jurisdiction for fabrication shop work (union and CLAC environments) (IND)
  • In-depth knowledge and application of safety and environmental principles, procedures, and legislation
  • Ability to run production and quality meetings and present at client meetings or pursuit work
  • Experience resolving grievance and employee relations issues
  • Conflict-resolution skills, problem-solving abilities, and professional judgment
  • Expert understanding of OFW productivity rates and Labour Cost Reports (LCRs)
  • CSA W178.2 welding inspector, CWB, or AWS CWI certification is an asset
