About the role
- Power Systems Specialist supporting Qualus’s power infrastructure engineering, studies, designs, and field testing. Developing arc flash analyses, mitigation solutions, reports, and project documentation.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical and engineering support for field work and office work
- Perform engineering studies and design work and generate engineering study and field test reports
- Update client electrical drawings, including one-lines, wiring diagrams, and schematics, using AutoCAD or Bluebeam PDF markups
- Collect field data and perform arc flash, coordination, and short circuit studies using SKM, ETAP, and/or Easypower
- Perform additional studies and services including load flow, harmonics, grounding, motor starting, buried cable heat rise, infrared scanning, and LOTO creation
- Apply knowledge of low- and medium-voltage switchgear, motor control centers, circuit breakers, panel boards, and disconnects to determine cost-effective mitigation solutions
- Develop relay protective setpoints and settings files
- Develop and/or implement arc flash mitigation designs
- Develop study reports and communicate results and recommendations to customers
- Support field service teams on electrical testing projects
- Adhere to company, industry, client, and safety protocols and standards
- Assess project resource needs and coordinate assignments with the project manager
- Learn to oversee projects from start to finish in compliance with company practices and procedures
- Manage project expenses and recommend expense reductions
- Coordinate project handoffs between sales and operations/engineering
- Participate in project kickoff meetings covering scope, specifications, budgets, schedules, and safety requirements
- Coordinate activities with other departments
- Execute small- to medium-sized projects with limited oversight
- Provide documentation for timely and accurate engineering-project invoicing, including SAFs, weekly timekeeping, change orders, test reports, and other deliverables
- Maintain project documentation and records in the proper location
Requirements
- BS Degree in Electrical Engineering OR Electrical Engineering Technologist Certification
- 0 to 2 years of experience in power systems engineering or experience directly related to working with electricity
- Ability to effectively communicate with internal, client and regulatory counterparts
- Ability to maintain production in a changing environment
- Knowledge of CEC/OESC, Z462 and other applicable codes and standards
- Strong computer and communication skills
- Microsoft Office programs experience: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Willingness to learn and operate client-provided programs and systems
- Ability to carry out written or oral instructions and deal with problems involving several concrete variables
- Ability to perform computations involving electrical power
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and identify urgent issues
- Ability to develop project plans, order resources and materials, hold job kickoff meetings, and identify changes in work scopes
- Ability to examine information, facts, and data and draw logical conclusions
- Ability to perform under pressure and manage multiple project assignments simultaneously
