About the role
- Engineer-in-Training designing protection, control, and metering systems for Qualus substations. Supporting utility power infrastructure projects from concept through construction and commissioning.
Responsibilities
- Perform and coordinate the design of protection, control, and metering systems for electrical substations from 12 kV to 500 kV
- Support and gradually take ownership of key design deliverables, including one-line diagrams, protection schematics, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and interconnection diagrams
- Develop protection and control design criteria and philosophies
- Prepare and review specifications, reports, construction packages, and test plans
- Assist in developing outage staging plans and commissioning documentation
- Perform configuration support for protection relays and automation devices
- Review vendor drawings and technical submissions
- Participate in design reviews, Safety by Design sessions, and constructability assessments
- Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning, including responding to RFIs and participating in site visits and field reviews
- Participate in factory acceptance testing and inspections as required
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure coordinated designs
- Manage assigned project tasks within scope, schedule, and budget constraints
- Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement
- Travel to client sites as required during project execution
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
- Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible for / working toward P.Eng. designation
- 2–5 years of relevant experience in power systems, transmission & distribution, or substation design
- Familiarity with substation protection and control systems, including relaying schemes and AC/DC designs
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, clients, and vendors
- Proven ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary engineering environment
