About the role

Senior Cloud Platform Engineer building scalable, low-latency connectivity infrastructure for electric vehicles at Rivian-Volkswagen Technologies. Operating messaging, APIs, Kubernetes, observability, and multi-region platform services.

Responsibilities

Architect, construct, and maintain foundational cloud services and platform solutions for low-latency, real-time messaging and APIs worldwide
Own high-throughput messaging systems such as NATS, including upgrades, performance validation, capacity planning, dashboards, and alerts
Design and support gRPC/Protobuf APIs and client integrations with robust telemetry
Lead infrastructure automation and deployment workflows using Kubernetes, ArgoCD, and Infrastructure as Code across development, staging, and production
Build production-grade monitoring with Datadog dashboards and alerting, using Prometheus/Grafana for metrics and SLO tracking
Configure and optimize reverse proxies and API gateways such as NGINX or Envoy for secure, reliable ingress and routing at scale
Oversee PKI/certificate pipelines and service identities for secure authentication and transport across environments
Develop and execute end-to-end, integration, and scaling test pipelines
Advance multi-region reliability, optimize cost and performance, and support expanding multi-tenant capabilities across programs and brands
Collaborate on technology powering vehicle, mobile, and cloud service communications

At least 5 years of software engineering experience focused on distributed systems, high-scale backend services, or streaming and messaging platforms
Strong proficiency in Go, Java, or TypeScript
Solid foundations in API design, networking, and concurrency
Practical experience managing production services with strong observability practices, including traces, logs, and metrics
Experience participating in on-call rotations
Working knowledge of AWS, Azure or GCP, Kubernetes, ArgoCD, and Infrastructure as Code solutions such as Crossplane or Terraform
Preferred: hands-on expertise with NATS, Kafka, MQTT, gRPC, and multi-region/multi-tenant architectures
Preferred: familiarity with NGINX/Envoy and secure transport and authentication patterns
Preferred: track record of contributions to high-impact open-source software
