About the role

  • Staff Firmware Engineer building software for Samsara’s IoT sensors, gateways, and dashcams. Bringing up hardware and delivering secure, power-efficient firmware for physical operations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop software running on millions of devices deployed by industrial and enterprise customers
  • Evaluate and select hardware components
  • Bring up new hardware platforms, boards, prototypes, and sensors
  • Build systems to gather data and detect meaningful events
  • Structure recorded data for efficient analysis across thousands of devices
  • Shape hardware decisions, including SoC, flash/RAM, and sensor selection
  • Configure I/O and establish SPI, I2C, UART, and BLE communications
  • Debug system initialization and validate hardware designs
  • Own peripheral drivers, secure bootloaders, device firmware updates, power management, and connectivity layers
  • Design protocols and hardware management for battery-powered sensors and gateways
  • Partner with product, full-stack, mobile, and quality engineers
  • Produce firmware data that is intact and useful to dispatchers, fleet managers, and technicians
  • Lead designs, reviews, and engineering practices as a Staff-level force multiplier
  • Drive consensus across teams and deliver iteratively at global scale

Requirements

  • 8+ years building firmware for resource-constrained systems shipped to real customers
  • Fluency in C
  • Substantial bare-metal and RTOS experience, such as Zephyr or FreeRTOS
  • Experience making scheduling, memory, and timing decisions
  • Experience bringing up new boards and unproven hardware
  • Fluency in SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, and ADC
  • Ability to debug hardware-software interfaces
  • Experience using oscilloscopes, network analyzers, or RF spectrum analyzers
  • Staff-level experience leading work across hardware, firmware, cloud, and quality from concept to shipped product
  • Ability to drive consensus across teams
  • Ability to write actionable design documents, review comments, and post-mortems
  • Ability to iterate quickly with automated testing and maintainable code
  • Experience using AI in daily workflow
  • BLE, cellular IoT, embedded security, OTA/device firmware updates, Embedded Linux, CAN/J1939, Python, Bash, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and electronics manufacturing experience are differentiators
