About the role
- Forest photo interpretation technician maintaining Nova Scotia’s forest inventory data for the provincial government. Reviewing aerial imagery, performing QA/QC, and coordinating field and contractor data collection.
Responsibilities
- Interpret Nova Scotia tree, shrub, and ground cover species, height, crown closure, and forest stand storeys through stereoscopic viewing of aerial photography using softcopy systems
- Conduct quality control reviews of interpreted inventory data for accuracy, consistency, and compliance with provincial forest inventory requirements
- Work directly with contract interpreters to provide feedback and improve data capture
- Collaborate with supervisors, contractors, data editors, data managers, and departmental staff on forest inventory attributes, sampling methodologies, specifications, and QA/QC processes
- Support improvement of inventory interpretation processes, standards, and quality management practices
- Perform office-based computer-monitor work with high visual demands
- Conduct fieldwork in remote and rugged areas, including travel, ATV use, and long-distance walking in various weather conditions
- Report to the GIS and Forest Inventory Program Administrator Officer
Requirements
- Graduated from a recognized forestry technician program
- Working knowledge and experience with softcopy systems and forest air photo interpretation in Nova Scotia or similar forest types
- Ability to differentiate major colour groups on imagery and perceive landscape elevation and vegetation height using an on-screen stereoscopic viewer
- Experience interpreting forest attributes from aerial imagery, including tree and shrub species, tree height, crown closure, and forest stand structure
- Experience in forest inventory data collection, timber cruising, Forest Ecosystem Classification (FEC), and related forest measurement and assessment programs
- Strong tree and woody plant identification skills, including Nova Scotia trees, shrubs, ground vegetation, and soil characteristics
- Knowledge of forest inventory specifications, sampling methodologies, and QA/QC principles
- Experience using electronic and manual hypsometers, diameter tapes, increment borers, prisms, angle gauges, and GPS units
- Ability to navigate and work safely in remote and rugged environments using aerial imagery, GPS, maps, and/or compass navigation
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to conduct fieldwork in various weather conditions and terrain types
- Ability to frequently lift, carry, and use equipment weighing up to 20 kg (45 lbs)
- Ability to travel to remote field locations throughout Nova Scotia
- Valid Nova Scotia Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent
- Current training in First Aid, WHMIS, ATV operation, chainsaw safety, boating safety, canoe use, radio communication, workplace respect and violence prevention, bear awareness, and defensive driving are assets
