About the role

  • Team Leader leading SLR Consulting’s Prairies ecology and biodiversity team. Managing ecological consulting projects, technical delivery, staff development, and regional business growth.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Prairies ecology team through people leadership, technical project delivery, and business development.
  • Oversee team resourcing, delivery quality, commercial performance, and professional development.
  • Lead team resourcing and capacity planning, balancing workloads and addressing delivery priorities.
  • Support strategic actions to grow the practice’s market position and technical capabilities.
  • Monitor team workload, utilization, and project financial performance, identifying risks and supporting corrective actions.
  • Manage performance proactively and address issues constructively.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop team members and oversee development and training plans.
  • Support recruitment efforts and ensure timely onboarding.
  • Build and maintain key client relationships and provide technical leadership for high-quality project delivery.
  • Contribute to business development, including proposals, presentations, bids, and market growth initiatives.
  • Manage multidisciplinary projects, including scope, budgeting, scheduling, resourcing, and quality assurance.
  • Prepare and review technical reports and regulatory submissions in alignment with provincial and federal environmental legislation.
  • Foster a positive culture supporting team health, safety, and wellbeing.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in ecology within the environmental consulting industry, including demonstrated experience leading teams and managing projects.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Registration, or eligibility for registration, as a Professional Biologist (P. Biol.) with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop technical staff, establish clear expectations, and manage performance constructively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with experience working collaboratively with colleagues, clients, contractors, Indigenous communities and their representatives, and regulators.
  • Knowledge of ecological conditions and applicable environmental regulatory requirements across the Canadian Prairies.
  • Experience planning and delivering ecological assessments, baseline studies, monitoring programs, and environmental oversight as part of multidisciplinary projects.
  • Excellent technical writing and review skills, with the ability to produce and oversee clear, defensible reports and regulatory submissions.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, and delivery within agreed timelines and budgets.
  • Experience building client relationships and contributing to proposals, business development, and repeat business.
