About the role
- Engineering Manager leading a small team building Spellbook’s AI copilot for transactional lawyers. Driving technical direction, product delivery, and effective use of coding agents.
Responsibilities
- Lead a small team building AI products for legal professionals
- Work with product, design, and customer-facing teams to identify important customer problems and decide what to build
- Develop understanding of how legal professionals use Spellbook through customer conversations, product data, and direct observation
- Set technical direction and prioritize work based on customer impact, business value, technical risk, and long-term platform leverage
- Lead delivery and take responsibility for quality, reliability, and results
- Prototype, contribute to architecture and implementation, and review critical code and designs
- Test and adopt coding-agent and automation practices that improve speed or quality
- Define standards for reviewing, testing, evaluating, and operating software produced by engineers and agents
- Help engineers improve technical judgment, product thinking, and effective use of AI
- Contribute to Spellbook’s engineering strategy as AI changes software development
Requirements
- 5+ years of software development experience, including technical leadership in a startup, scale-up, or other fast-moving environment
- Strong system design and web development skills
- Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node, and AWS
- Experience leading the development and operation of production software
- Regular use of coding agents or similar AI tools, with concrete examples of improving development speed or quality
- Ability to prototype, review code, evaluate technical approaches, and make pragmatic architecture decisions
- Strong product judgment and a record of turning ambiguous customer problems into focused plans and shipped products
- Ability to balance near-term delivery with reliability, maintainability, and longer-term technical needs
- Clear communication and ability to align engineering, product, and design around decisions and tradeoffs
- Experience coaching engineers and setting a high standard for performance without adding unnecessary process
- Must be legally able to work and reside in Canada at the time of application
- Nice to have: experience building LLM-based products, agent workflows, or evaluation systems
- Nice to have: familiarity with operating AI systems reliably and securely in production
- Nice to have: track record of launching new products at scale
- Nice to have: founder experience or another role with broad ownership
