About the role
- Engineering Manager leading software teams building Spellbook’s AI copilot for transactional lawyers. Owning technical direction, LLM-powered features, AWS infrastructure, and engineering delivery.
Responsibilities
- Lead technical projects from inception to launch
- Work with cross-functional stakeholders to prioritize and solve customer pain points
- Define technical vision for managed teams and build alignment on complex issues
- Manage up to 8 software engineers across projects
- Provide coaching, mentorship, feedback, and performance management
- Conduct annual performance reviews and 1:1 meetings with direct reports
- Design, architect, and implement new Spellbook application features
- Set technical direction and Engineering OKRs
- Scope complex tasks, coordinate teams, and unblock challenges
- Use OpenAI, Anthropic, and other LLMs to improve application functionality
- Collaborate with product management on the React application
- Improve the Express and tRPC-based API
- Improve performance and reliability and fix bugs based on user feedback
- Support hiring and onboarding
- Maintain engineering documentation, resources, and training materials in GitHub and Notion
- Establish and implement engineering best practices and workflows
- Build and maintain AWS infrastructure using AWS CDK
- Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback
- Support other responsibilities and projects as required
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in Software Development
- Exceptional communication skills and ability to explain and advocate ideas to a diverse audience
- Ability to take a product feature from an abstract idea through beta implementation to production deployment
- Demonstrated project management skills across multiple projects and priorities
- Self-starter and problem-solver motivated by curiosity and continuous improvement
- Team-oriented approach and motivation to improve team effectiveness
- Solutions-focused approach to resolving issues
- Experience providing mentorship, coaching, and constructive feedback
- Experience setting technical direction and scaling and maturing an engineering organization
- Firm grasp of software development and computer engineering fundamentals
- Ability to break down complex customer requirements into achievable plans
- Candidates must be in Ontario
- Must be legally able to work and reside in Canada at the time of application
- No relocation or visa sponsorship support provided
- Nice to have: TypeScript; JavaScript build tooling such as Vite, esbuild, and swc; startup experience; AWS/CDK infrastructure; innovative product features; LLMs, prompt improvement, and agent orchestration
