About the role

  • Sun Life director underwriting ultra-high-net-worth life insurance cases up to $200 million. Mentoring underwriters and partnering with advisors, reinsurers, and business leaders across Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze insurance applications and evidence of insurability
  • Apply holistic underwriting expertise across medical, financial, and lifestyle factors
  • Make sound and competitive underwriting decisions
  • Negotiate decisions with reinsurers according to reinsurance treaties and internal rules
  • Communicate and explain decisions to advisors and Clients’ physicians as required
  • Build relationships with business leaders, distribution teams, and advisors
  • Deliver exceptional service and expertise
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities and recommend solutions
  • Contribute to teamwork, innovation, and professional development
  • Attend and contribute to regular high-net-worth case reviews
  • Mentor employees and help them advance their careers
  • Partner with specialized case managers, advisors, reinsurance partners, and business leaders to assess risk up to $200 million
  • Report to the Chief Underwriter and Claims Risk Officer
  • Travel to and represent the company at industry and sales events as required

Requirements

  • Decision-making authority exceeding $10,000,000 for Life and $1,000,000 for Critical Illness
  • Exceptional analytical, judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Client- and results-focused with proactive service orientation
  • Ability to influence and negotiate
  • Strong knowledge of medical and financial risk factors
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines, and balance competing priorities
  • Interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal and external partners
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and take on responsibility
  • 10–15 years of experience as an Individual Life Underwriter
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • ALU certificate
  • Commitment to ongoing education with the goal of attaining FALU and FLMI designations
  • Bilingualism in French and English, both oral and written, required
  • Frequent interaction with French- and English-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada and worldwide
  • Some travel and representation at industry and sales events required
